When CF shatters the lives of parents, siblings and patients, they struggle daily to keep it all together.

We provide CF patients a breath of hope.

Driving down the iconic Overseas Highway, from mainland Florida to Key West, is a breathtaking journey surrounded by endless ocean views and sun-drenched skies. For a family affected by Cystic Fibrosis, this scenic drive is more than just a vacation; it's a rare chance to escape the daily medical grind, to breathe easier, and to rediscover joy in simply being together. Amidst the waves and warmth, moments of peace, connection and renewed hope begin to blossom in their hearts.

Why Key West

When our founder, Mr. Chaim A. Wolkenfeld, together with the Child Life Society executive board, learned of growing evidence, such as the study published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, touting the benefits of high-salt concentrated environments supporting airway clearance in children with Cystic Fibrosis, they launched a careful search for the ideal respite home location.

"These children must receive the best therapy possible," they agreed.

After months of thorough research, seeking an affordable, accessible destination with the right climate, Mr. Wolkenfeld reflects, "We were blessed to find a beautiful location in Key West, Florida."

Key West’s tropical island climate, rich in natural ocean salt air and pollution-free, has proven highly effective for CF patients. This ocean environment helps open and clear the lungs, loosen mucus build-up, increase appetite, and reduce infections and hospitalizations by as much as 50%.

Just ten days at LifeShine’s Family Respite Homes can provide a child and their family with months of improved breathing, energy, and quality of life.

The Stay

Here is where the outside world, one filled with ‘what-ifs’, secrecy and medical terminology, almost ceases to exist.  From the moment they arrive in the cocoon-like bubble of their private Lifeshine Family Respite home, patients and their families can simply live like a regular family.

Each home is a private and isolated ‘Garden of Eden’ boasting a canal, saltwater pool, fully stocked library and media center, and hotel-style amenities.

In Key West, FL, the therapeutic effect is maximized with constant exposure to the salty ocean air.

Our Lifeshine Family Respite homes are built and maintained to the highest standards. We prioritize top-rated furniture, seating, couches, and flooring, keeping the homes meticulously clean, as is best for CF patients.

Young Elisheva, a CF patient, wrote a three-page letter describing how miraculous it felt to be in Lifeshine’s Family Respite home, “For the duration of our stay, I was just breathing the way normal people breathe.”

The expression of such sentiments is heartbreaking, as it brings home the realization that children with CF and their families would give up everything, just to have what we barely think about, the ability to breathe normally.

Lasting Impact

Cystic Fibrosis has no cure, but time spent in Key West’s unique high-salt, oceanic climate provides powerful, medically proven relief.

The salty air naturally loosens the thick mucus in patients’ respiratory and digestive systems, leading to easier breathing, improved appetite, and a significant reduction, up to 50%, in lung infections and hospitalizations.

The impact lasts well beyond the stay.  For six to eight months after returning home, children breathe easier and live more fully.

Just as vital, families return emotionally recharged, with renewed hope, resilience, and the strength to face the challenges ahead. Their time at LifeShine’s Family Respite Home leaves an imprint of healing, carrying them forward until their next stay.

Child Life Society full sponsors these therapeutic respite trips, including airfare, car rental, food and all other necessities.

Currently, Child Life Society boasts three Lifeshine Respite Homes.

Lifeshine Family Respite is the only program of its kind in North America. Due to medical considerations, only one family can stay in a home at a time, and desperate families frequently need to be turned down as a result of the space shortage.

With your generous support, more homes can be purchased, and more families can relax and rejuvenate together from the unbearable physical and emotional toll that the disease takes on the entire family.
